           LOOKING FORWARD TO JUNE

Why am I celebrating zoom?
Because it's so fun!
I got this idea from a festival I went to.

This week I'm celebrating a virtual Rotterdam festival I was invited to.  I woke up early on a Wednesday so I could take a phone call with a theater official on Whatsapp. (There's a 7 hour time difference)

The officials sent me a script.  Here is what the script said:

A-Me
B(the caller)

A. Hi, you are speaking with.....
B. Hi, you are speaking with ....
I got your number from Building Conversation.
A. Yes. They told me you would call.
B. I will follow a script.
A. Me too.
B. We are asked to think of an impressive experience in which we encountered someone who
we didn’t know.
Silence
B. Can you describe the experience in as much detail as possible?
A. describes the experience
B. asks clarifying questions.

It was a surreal conversation because I was talking about an experience I had with a stranger while also talking to the stranger at the same time.  The pauses in between were chilling.  I told this person about an encounter I had on beach in California and how I felt like an outsider. And she told me about an interaction she had with someone on a Terrace and the person was talking with her while acting as though she was wasn't there, like having a conversation with herself.  She described to her some very violent experiences she had been through.
The whole experience was very memorable, especially because I'm not used to getting up at 5:30 AM to have conversations with  individuals whom I'm not acquainted.  It was fun!

  1. I joined a postcard exchange just before the pandemic began, and I felt the same way you did in your stranger conversation when I sent the person a postcard.

I thought Maybe You Should Talk to Someone was fantastic. I hope you like it, too.

  3. What an interesting experience. Talking with strangers on the phone or in a video chat would be weird for me but to have that kind of conversation would be weird too. Glad to her you enjoyed it.
