"The Murder of a Century:The Gilded Age Crime That Scandalized a City & Sparked the Tabloid Wars",  by Paul Collins. This novel had a slow introduction, the only event that captured the audience from the beginning had to be the fact that a body is found severed in half, the head is no where to be found and the abdomen is found laying in a river with its arms still attached.

 I could of done without the details, leading the detectives to whom the body belonged to, (we get it), there was no forensic evidence in the nineteenth century.  The only thing that could dictate how long a body had been deceased was the heat of the body, and the only thing that identified the status of the person and his or her occupation was the money in their wallet and the softness/roughness of their hands, telling whether they worked in the mine friends or they had higher status jobs that didn't have them work much with their hands.
