A Halloween Week Full of Surprises

Last Sunday, we went to a trunk-or-treat. It was one of the Halloween events we ended up attending this week.

On Wednesday, after grocery shopping, I had enough energy to make it to the YMCA in Woodbury. On Thursday, I worked, and then Friday was a day off because my son didn't have school. I took him swimming at the YMCA in Eagan, and afterward we went to another trunk-or-treat. We had seen some people walking around marketing the event, so we decided to stop by and see what it was about.

Saturday turned out to be one of the best Halloweens I've had.

We spent part of the day cleaning the house, knowing we weren't going anywhere until around five. After that, we left to take a friend somewhere, and then decided to do some trick-or-treating on our own before meeting up with a couple of friends later in the evening.

We started out on Bernard Street, a neighborhood we've been visiting for the last three years. It's not even close to our house, but they always have some of the best Halloween displays. We walked around and looked at the decorations before heading to another house that had two enormous Jason inflatables in the front yard. They were about 20 feet tall! The people there were also handing out large candy bars, which made the stop even better.

After that, we ended up in another neighborhood where I had noticed that the entire street was blocked off. You couldn't drive through in your car, and there were tents, a haunted house, and bonfires set up along the street. Almost everyone seemed to be participating in the Halloween festivities.

There were people walking around with fake chainsaws trying to scare the kids, and everyone was so friendly. At one point, someone offered my son the chance to take as much candy as he wanted from a huge pot. He was absolutely thrilled.

I was really impressed by how much effort this little neighborhood had put into the event. The whole street was involved, and it felt like a genuine community block party. I'd never seen such a small neighborhood come together to put on something like that.

Later that evening, we met up with some of my son's friends from school and their parents. We walked around a three-block radius near their house, collecting more candy and enjoying the rest of the evening together.

Afterward, we came home and made walking tacos. We spent some time eating, talking, and reminiscing about our own Halloween experiences growing up. It was fun comparing the things we used to do as kids with what the kids are experiencing now. By the time the evening was over, we'd managed to fit quite a bit of Halloween into one day.

  1. The next block over from here goes to incredible trouble to have giant pumpkins, giant skeletons, huge supplies of candy, a few tent-type shelters set up with refreshments for all (such as cider), and many adults and children in very elaborate costumes. The police block off traffic (and maintain a discrete presences) to keep things safe. All in all it’s incredible. Sounds like you found a similar event.
