Reading

Magnolia Parks.  Lots of fun stuff in this novel. I'd describe it as a Billionaire novel series meets Korean K-pop drama because the little love triangles in this novel are very similar but maybe more intense. (And it's set in the UK) There's rhythm and snappy dialogue in Jessa Hastings writing that made me understand why this novel has at least 5,000 reads on GoodReads.

I loved the concept in this romance novel. The characters travel in their dreams.  I kind of thought it could be expanded upon or even work better as a fantasy novel but I heard that time travelling novels are the hardest to write overall and writers should avoid it if possible.

This book by Elizabeth O'Roark was recommended by Youtuber: Peace, Love Books and It was described as one of her books she was obsessed with.  This book is outstanding!. Olivia's character had such a tone and rebellious attitude. I don't want to spoil it for you but she is a runner with a flaw.  This novel literally got me excited about Exercising again.  The energy between the characters in this dual narrative novel was phenomenal.

46 PLAYS FOR AMERICA'S FIRST LADIES presented by Theatre Pro Rata

46 Plays for America’s First Ladies, is being produced by Theatre Pro Rata at The Crane Theatre in Minneapolis through October 16th.

46 Plays for America’s First Ladies is a companion piece to the past Neo-Futurist script 43 Plays for 43 Presidents [originally produced in 2004, and remounted in 2012 as 44 Plays for 44 Presidents and re-published as 45 Plays for 45 Presidents in 2019].

This production consisted of one to five minute sketches that used a variety of theatrical conventions, including tableau and musical pieces with audience participation. Scenic projections helped the audience picture the first ladies, especially those whose roles were in the early 19th century for whom we had very little information available.

The insertion of comedy into the scenes was used to examine the roles of marginalized individuals who worked for the first families, many unrecognized and unrewarded.

Guitar music and songs were played to parody the First Ladies’ lives. These happened to be the most engaging scenes, as patrons bobbed their heads and clapped along. One may not associate the First Ladies with comedy, since a few of them died of tuberculosis, including Hannah Hoes Van Buren, wife of Martin. Others like Mary Todd Lincoln had a child die while at the White House. Some First Ladies were quite ambitious like Edith Roosevelt who hired her own staff and cultivated contacts in Britain. The juxtaposition between tragedy and comedy created this ebb and flow of emotion, where the bits of comic relief sustained the overall performance.

Lights cast down on patrons as they were asked by actors (Christy Johnson, Heather Meyer, Nissa Nordland Morgan, Sif Oberon, Anjeline Ramirez) to pause and think about some of the more traumatic moments in the First Ladies’ lives. This interpretation illuminated the roles the first ladies played in the White House-more than dressing fashionable and decorating. In some cases the scenes exaggerated stereotypes about the presidency that may have not been examined before, scenes that had to do with misogyny and interpersonal relationships. This production is written by Genevra Gallo-Bayiates, Sharon Greene, Chloe Johnston, Bilal Dardai, and Andy Bayiates(Neo-Futurists) and directed by Shanan Custer.

Purchase tickets for 46 Plays for America’s First Ladies at https://www.theatreprorata.org/.  Orlando will be showing this spring at the Crane.

LOOKING FORWARD to November

This week I went to Costco and picked up a pie for Thanksgiving.  I love Costco for specific items like cheesecake and summer clothes and odds and ends you can get for your house.

It was great talking to my ride-share clients about positive experiences they are drawing in.  One of my clients works as a substitute teacher, and we exchanged stories.I worked as a sub in 2009-2011 in Saint Paul.  He remembered having me as a ride-share driver a while back and how I liked to talk about potholes.  He had an east coast accent which was memorable.

I bought my son this big hamburger plushy from Costco and he took a picture and saved it to his iPad.

Always Only You by Chloe Liese is an opposites-attract, forbidden love sports romance about a nerdy, late-blooming hockey star, and his tough cookie coworker who keeps both her soft side and her autism diagnosis to herself. Complete with a meddling secretary, tantric yoga torture, and a scorching slow burn, this standalone is the second in a series of novels about a Swedish-American family of five brothers, two sisters, and their wild adventures as they each find happily ever after.

Gary Zukav, one of the pioneer members of the New Age Movement in psychology.  He has built upon the contents of his first book The Dancing Wu Li Masters to show how we create our own reality through action and thought.
I'm loving Laura Berman's work. She gives advice for those seeking love.
If someone tells her that they really want that person in the coffee shop. She says, "Now wait, I challenge you by asking what are the emotions you are seeking when you see that person?"  (love, safety, security, cherishing?)  And then she says "When you walk in that coffee shop, bring that emotion, and if they are a match for you, they'll come straight for you."

This week I also participated in a Community(improv) Jam online, and I loved it because we played a game that had each person go back and forth listing words based on a category and I slammed that competition.  Watch it here.

LOOKING FORWARD to September

This week I was in Chicago to see the comedian Tom Papa.

Early morning on Wednesday I set off to the airport at 7 AM. A lot less people were there than on a Friday. I brought a carry-on, and noticed an individual next to me who had three carry-ons including a briefcase which we stashed below my seat because he had the aisle.

LOOKING FORWARD to September

This week I spent some time online and went to a work meeting.
I took people to the airport and I talked to a woman about working at a private airport during the Super Bowl (a couple years back) and she said how people had to schedule slots to fly into Minnesota and if they missed those slots they couldn't land.

This week I went to see Scenes from a Hat, a improv act in the Twin Cities that gather at Mall of America but they have a studio in Invergrove Heights where they record there shows for an online audience. We were invited to give them prompts to inspire scenes and take pictures with them after the show. I reached out to some friends in my building as I haven't seen them in a while, and I did some more improv online.

LOOKING FORWARD to August

This week I got some new tires as they were balding.  My travelling mechanic (from Craigslist) tried to say I needed tire rods but all I needed were new tires and an alignment thanks to the dealership who confirmed.
I finally bought another car. It's a Toyota Corolla equipped with a moon roof and leather seats. Gorgeous.
Its my son's sixth birthday on Tuesday and I bought him a few toys and he'll see his aunt, uncles and cousins for a small party. As you can see above he got a fake tattoo and insisted he wanted a permanent one until I told him about the pain involved.

Lastly I drove for ride-share and this woman was with her husband and said she forgot her phone at the hotel(on the way to airport) so we hurried back.  In the car ride she told me she lives in San Diego(Lucky!) and we got in a discussion about the military since my brother was stationed in San Diego (Marines) for many years. Then her husband chimed in with I had wanted to be a military dentist until I had worked alongside this dentist who complained about how no one should become a dentist.
I nodded my head and agreed, glad that you decided to work in military administration and work his way up the ladder.

LOOKING FORWARD to August

Last night I went to see ComedySportz @ Strike Theater in Minneapolis. In this improv sports show, two teams played to win! They took requests from the audience with games like three rooms and hesitation. I almost died laughing when one of the improvisers kept referring to Hogwarts as Azkaban.

I took my son, Zulfi, to a new park that he enjoyed and they were having a carnival with a bouncy house, along with rocky climbing. Police were giving away badges and he seemed to have a terrific time.
Rained a lot this week

I tried to buy my contacts online (from Canada) and came against an obstacle. I'll try again later this week. Lastly, I drove all the way to Andover to look at a Toyota Corolla and I'm still debating about whether to buy it.

Interview with Curvee B #MNfringe

photo of Curvee

Karaoke meets improvisational burlesque at this year's Minnesota Fringe Festival.  Audience members will have the chance to sing their favorite songs, along with a rotating cast of burlesque performers as they try and make it sexy.

I have with me Curvee B, a burlesque performer and producer.

Curvee B, how did you get your start in burlesque?

In 2018, I was looking for a new activity that complemented the body positivity journey I was on. As a fan of personal growth work, I believe in stepping outside of my comfort zone and found burlesque offered a supportive space to bring these things together. I started taking classes at Minnsky Theater and later The Rose Academy of Burlesque. In August 2019, I competed and won Nudie Newbies, a local burlesque competition show. In the fall of 2021, I leveraged my background in project management and passion for making more spaces available for individuals to perform and started co-producing a monthly cabaret show: TC Cabaret. And now, here I am producing my dream show: Karaoke After Dark, with Orthogonal Productions.

What inspires your own burlesque performances?

When I begin putting together a new act, yes, music, costumes and choreography are the tools I use, though the inspiration comes from creating pieces that celebrate my body. As someone who never thought a body like mine deserved to be seen, let alone shine on a stage, I am challenging those old scripts about what I/society thought me and my body could do. I’m reclaiming my space and transforming it into a powerful and positive force. It’s also important for me to feel like it’s making a difference. I’m hopeful that others can feel inspired to do things that step them outside of their comfort zone, encourage them to grow and bring them joy.

How does it feel to have live audiences and theater back?

As a self-declared extrovert (okay, other people know it too), I am thrilled to be back on stage. It’s also been enjoyable to be an audience member and support talented individuals and their art. Creating memorable experiences together is life-giving and live theater offers a unique experience you can’t find anywhere else.

This show is a mixture of karaoke and burlesque, can you give us some songs you will be performing or talk about themes?(correct me if I’m wrong)

This show combines three of my favorite things. Karaoke, Burlesque, and Improv. How do those things work together? Well, let me tell you.

Karaoke. At each show audience members will sign-up to sing a karaoke song of their choice (from the curated list of 100+ songs). They will be on stage, have a rockstar mic, karaoke lyrics at their fingertips, and will perform vocally while the burlesque performers make it sexy.

The karaoke list has songs that meet the criteria of being an excellent karaoke song, are fun to burlesque to, and work within the length of the show. While most karaoke lists are broken down by song, artist, or genre, we leveled it up with some pretty fun categories. There are too many to share here, so you’ll have to come and see what we have selected! With that said, here are my top 4 categories:

  1. “What Are You Wearing?” only makes sense to have since the burlesque performers will be taking theirs off. Songs like: “These Boots Are Made For Walking” and “Thong Song”.

  2. In “Dating Apps Made Me Do It” we have the breakup songs everyone needs. Songs like: “I Will Survive” and “Bye, Bye, Bye”.

  3. “Body Positive AF” songs are to remind you of the awesome human you are. Songs like: “All About That Bass” and “Juice”.

  4. “Sorry (not sorry)” are those songs that sound like apologies, but, we all know they really aren’t. Songs like, “Oops, I Did It Again” and “It Wasn’t Me”

Burlesque. Each night has a star-studded rotating cast of 6 performers from the Twin Cities and St. Cloud area. So, you’ll definitely want to be there to see ALL of their talents. *wink*

Improv. The burlesque performers will not know what karaoke song they are performing to until they hit the stage. Their outfits range from classic gowns and boas to nerdy and kitschy costumes. No matter what the song, they will make their outfits work. Each performer is excited to embrace the artistry of creating a live theater moment that feels authentic, inspired, sexy, and fun.

What do you hope the audience will take away from this performance?

Ultimately, I want them to feel like they’ve had a fun, sexy, and memorable evening. For the audience members who don’t sing, I want them to feel like they are part of a unique experience made just for them. For the audience members who sing, I want them to feel supported and empowered to be their rockstar selves on the karaoke mic. It’s important to create an inclusive and supportive environment. If even one person comes away from the show inspired to begin doing karaoke, burlesque, chair, dance, or improv, I will be happy. It takes courage to perform, period and I want everyone to feel like a star!

What is the funnest thing about the Fringe Festival so far?

The excitement of creating a really unique experience, booking such an amazing cast of talented performers, and feeling the anticipation build to see what stage magic will be created at each show.

Do you have any upcoming performances?(outside the fringe)

Yes. I am co-producer of TC Cabaret. Our show is at the Brass Rail on the first Friday of the month. Each month we book an inclusive and diverse cast of performers who perform burlesque, drag, pole, dance, sing, and more, from the Twin Cities area and beyond.
